She doesn’t need a British Passport if she is a Permanent Resident. I and some of my friends have lived in the United States of America for decades and all my children are USA Citizens some of who are in the USA Armed Forces, Medical Doctors, Lawyers, and Dentists. I am a Permanent Resident and don’t intend to be a Citizen. I have been to Ghana several times. Until I commit certain kinds of Felonies, I cannot be deported in any way. It is sad she was treated like that. Who should take care of her if she’s not allowed to go back to Britain? Would a USA or Canadian Citizen have been treated that way. This apparently shows discrimination against people of African origin. If it was in Uncle Sam’s country, Britain would have been terribly sued.

The lady is in the same boat as you. She has lived in UK practically all her life and does not have a British citizenship, but travels on immigration documents. It doesn't make any sence that she isn't a British citizen after all these in UK. She wouldn't have gotten into the problem she faced in Ghana if she were a British citizen.

Even me an illiterate knows you need a passport or some positive proof of residency or citizenship when traveling outside or back into your country of residence. Sometimes everything goes smoothly but at times too you may find yourself in an unbearable situation due to ongoing changes to regulations. Even if you are a born citizen and you lose your passport outside your home country the situation becomes complicative
