The Student Loan Trust Fund is a lifeline for many of us, but the interest rate structure is becoming a heavy burden. With the 182-day T-Bill rate compounded annually during studies and national service, and then T-Bill +2% compounded semi-annually during repayment, many graduates end up owing far more than they borrowed. The truth is, a lot of beneficiaries remain unemployed for two years or more after school, yet the debt keeps growing. Most students also do not fully understand the financial trap they are entering. If this continues, it could create a generation of indebted graduates facing hopelessness and financial stress. For the sake of Ghana’s future, the interest rate model must be reviewed before it causes greater harm to our youth and the nation as a whole.
