Industrialization, “One District One Factory,” and the “24-Hour Economy” all essentially mean the same thing. The only two leaders who truly pursued industrialization in a meaningful way were Nkrumah and Acheampong. Nkrumah focused on state-led factories, while Acheampong promoted private initiatives such as Kowus, Tata, and Boakye Mattress.
Unfortunately, the only leader who deliberately destroyed existing factories was J.J. Rawlings. He became one of the wealthiest people in Ghana, yet the source of his wealth has never been clear.
Industrialization is not new to Ghana, but aside from Acheampong continuing Nkrumah’s vision, successive governments have abandoned or dismantled projects started by their predecessors. Wasting resources has become the order of the day.
This raises an important question: will Mahama continue the projects already initiated by Akufo-Addo, or will he act as though no money has been invested in them? “One District One Factory” and the “24-Hour Economy” are essentially the same policy ideas, so even if the approach changes, ongoing projects cannot simply be ignored.
Mahama is not a savior. Let us also remember that Osofo Bempa once claimed Mahama’s hands are covered in blood. Whose blood, one may ask?
