I think we've to start from the university campuses. Will Prof Bokpin be happy when he's called by his students without the academic title Prof?I've come across Mathematics or Chemistry professors elsewhere, who dropped their titles when dealing with their students. Psychologically I realised it created a close relationship.

That guy understand a little bit of Ghanaian's problem. Big titles can't produce even what they hold those titles for. Don't fool ourselves in copying Dr Kwame Nkrumah's. He was leader besides his education.

Quality and productivity will be hard to meet in our Ghana for years to come. For starters, we have low performing and low caliber practicing lawyers in Ghana because the past 25 years or so saw the admission into law colleges political party membership, preferably an NPP membership, and the rest is history.
Soon thereafter Ghana institute of journalism joined the frenzy by doing same and today media houses across Ghana are manned by a plethora of ignorant, lying partisan hacks who know nothing about journalism but are paid to offer the airwaves to guests who come on air with credentials retrieved from Crackerjack cereal boxes to spew nonsense.
Today, the absolute majority of Ghanaians with post graduate degrees collected them from foreign universities offering online education. Parliament has not helped but become a facilitator fir people to use scholarships and grants intended for Ghana's poor but brilliant students to be captured, abused and misused by MP's and politically connected hoodlums to obtain certificates from prestigious US and UK institutions.

Sure prof Bokpin you have hit the nail on the head.
This reminds me of one American doctor I used to work with delivering health services to very very ill patients. The shift schedule used to begin by 07.00hrs every morning and end time’t’ ie any time all patients at OPD were all attended to .There were times we will be there from morning till after 10.00hrs. People who came in with degrees, masters and doctorate (MD) degrees and were only complacent and worshiped their acedemic degrees and could not work hard and endure long hours at work were thrown out. These expatriate doctors and nurses will work these enduring hours day in day out appearing so exhausted but still able to be on top of the job.
I still remember this statement that was made by one of the expatriate American doctors and this is the statement: “America rose up to heights because of work oriented qualifications but not acquiring titles theoretically like professor, doctor etc high level acquired qualifications without performance”. This is what we have in Ghana and for that matter our part of the world development is stagnant. We glorify and talk more of qualifications but not backed by practical performance or competence relative to the work on the ground.
Only glorifying ‘book long’ by memorising (chew and pour) yet stagnant with nothing to show practically on the ground.
When shall we leave this stagnant zone of no development to the zone where our PhDs holders, professors and our Drs will start thinking out of the box with creativity, innovations and inventions.
So prof Bokpin you have said it all.
Long Live Ghana In JESUS CHRIST name!! And every body say Amen and Amen.

You are right, Prof. Ghanaians are titles and certificates worshippers. That is why we are not able to develop as a country. We must rise above certificates and focus on performance and productivity.

Well said. Sick of folks brandishing titles everywhere and pursuing never ending academic titles while the country languishes in poverty, low productivity, lack of jobs, bad governance etc.

Hmmm, we have all these titles in Ghana but haven't moved forward. No innovation, creativity no research & development going on. Just a stagnant country importing everything. All the solar energy from the burning sun going to waste because we can't prioritise our learning so we can be masters in solar technology. Only buying from China. Now we are even a champion country where stolen cars from abroad are shipped to instead of being at the forefront of car manufacturing!!! When or when Ghana???

I can not agree with you more. Well said. Our fixation on title is a cultural phenomenon which could be traced to our Chieftaincy system. We bestowed our chiefs with all kinds of titles and respect them as semi-Gods. Hence, the feeling that the more title we acquire the more respect we will get in society. In Ghana we don't aspire after academic title to make an impact on society. No, it is all about acquiring respect and prestige.
Titles are killing Ghanaians unknowingly.
