Is this what we going to use the UGMC for? This state of the art medical facility should not be used to cure luxurious lifestyle induced health problems like obesity. There are many less expensive ways of going down in weight than undergoing operation. For example, one can engage in daily exercise, eat less calories and fatty foods, etc. This tertiary medical facility should be used to cure life threatening health problems confronting Ghanaians not be used to serve only the elites of the society.

I do not applaud the medical team for carrying out this operation. This is not the kind of health problems that they should concentrate on when there are many people suffering from heart, kidney, cancer and other cardiovascular and autoimmune diseases. Obese people should go to the gym to lose weight. I hope that our dynamic Minister of Health will keep an eye on what is ongoing at the UGMC. That hospital should serve the average Ghanaian and not only the elites of the society.

Obesity is very much related to lifestyle. He/she could do away with it through exercise at the gym, less calorie and fatty food intake, etc. What we need is general education on how to live a healthy life. How often do most people go for a walk in a week? I insist that our tertiary health care institutions should concentrate on more pressing health issues. As far as I am concerned obesity is a luxurious health problem.
