In the 1970's, students sat for Common Entrance to enter public second cycle schools. Pupils rather sat for special entrance exams to seek for admission to mainly private schools, both basic and secondary. Nobody did common entrance to move from formal primary to middle schools.

For all we know, this guy may be talking about practice in his native country, somewhere!
