The Minister of Energy and Green Transition and Member of Parliament for Yapei-Kusawgu, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced plans by the government to introduce solar-powered vehicles for official use by ministers, heads of departments and agencies.

Speaking on the second episode of the Government Accountability Series on Wednesday, July 16, 2025, the minister said the initiative seeks to reduce the electricity bills of public institutions while enhancing energy efficiency through the installation of solar rooftops to schools, clinics, and government offices.

According to him, the government had already launched its Electric Vehicle Promotion Programme and commissioned the first EV charger at the premises of the Energy Commission.

“As part of government efforts, we are importing the first EV vehicles for government agencies. Very soon, you will see ministers driving EV vehicles.

“We'll roll it out to other departments and heads of agencies, some of who are here, will be driving EV vehicles powered by solar power,” he stated.

He added that through collaboration with the private sector, the initiative will be expanded to include commercial drivers and the general public, to make the use of EVs widespread.

“We will, in collaboration with the private sector, extend it to commercial drivers and other users so that EV vehicles would become the norm as far as the nation is concerned,” he added.

The energy minister further disclosed that his ministry is currently developing a five-year strategic document to guide the implementation of renewable energy initiatives under Ghana’s green transition policy.

This document, he said, will serve as a blueprint to ensure a systematic and impactful shift towards cleaner energy sources.
