Yes, even then there was corruption, Authoritarianism, dictatorship, and possible creation of one-party state. People did not fight off colonialism only to be ruled by a dictator. The reason why Nkrumah is still important is because most of the leaders that proceeded him were useless..

  There is something that Nkrumah never learned in life while growing in Politics: DOGS DON’T FIGHT LIONS. Nkrumah should have learned never involved himself in International Politics of the Superpowers. He foolishly involved himself in such Politics on the side of the Soviet Union, trying to drag the rest of Africa with him to the side of the Soviet Union. Was he expecting Uncle Sam, Canada, and the rest of the Democratic and Capitalist West to stand Akimbo? Here, Kwame behaved foolishly. By trying to carry on with his agenda, he became a Dictator, sending his Political Opponents to Nsawam Prison without trial. That made him unpopular. His unpopularity was characterized by the jubilation that occurred throughout Ghana after his overthrow. I was young but saw the jubilations in Accra, Tema, and Koforidua. When Busia was overthrown, there was not a single jubilation anywhere in our dear Ghana. When NDC lost the election and Rawlings was to hand over power, there was even jubilation and the Burma Camp and Police Stations. This should clearly make all Politicians in Ghana realize that Dictatorship is not tolerated in Ghana and many societies. Let there be a Military Takeover in China and there is no Communism there anymore and watch the jubilation that shall take place there.
  As for Nkrumah, he dug his own grave and laid in it. I am glad he did not make Ghana like Soviet Union or China. I am very glad Bawumia schooled partly in Soviet Union but did not cultivate any Socialist tendencies that he would implement in Ghana because that would not have worked. Nkrumah the Idiotic Dictator should rest in Perfect and Horrible Peace in his Grave.

  Queuing for basic supply was not entirely true. But let assume it was really the case nationwide that doesn't mean Ghana was bankcrupt... Nkrumah had for the 2 previous years (64 and 65) hoarded the Ghana cocoa beans in silos without exporting them as he usually does. Why? Because Nkrumah had requested that the global trade council should allow raw material exporters to be part of price determination, something the western world wouldn't want any part of it.
  The primary idea behind why Nkrumah did that was to bring the western world to the discussion table as Ghana was the world number producer of cocoa beans...
  
  In addition to that, he, Nkrumah decided to join the eastern bloc to increase Ghana's prospect of cutting edge technology and industrialization since the western bloc never want any black nation to develop (especially when Nkrumah had called on them to build factories and industries in Ghana but to know avail).
  
  In retaliation of Nkrumah's actions, the western world deliberately placed embargoes on their export of common goes. And since at that time Ghana's own industries were at their enfancy meant that there will be obvious shortage of goods (not because Ghana was bankcrupt) but rather an artificial blockade to cause that effect, and to use that also as a propaganda against Nkrumah's regime (to facilitate the coup).
  
  So Ghana was not broke as in bankcrupt where it couldn't do anything (even though, admittedly things weren't better as before due to the austerity announced by Nkrumah because of the restructuring of the economy from pounds to the Ghana cedis). Ghana could afford purchasing all the goods needed for the citizenry but for the bad blood of the western world who deliberately blocked imports of basic goods that the citizenry relied on.
  
  They deliberately did that to hoodwink Ghanaians that Nkrumah had squandered their money when it wasn't the case. But amazingly it worked for them and Ghanaians believed it. 3ne y3n 'n3!

  While I do not believe in tyranical leadership, I nevertheless believe that until Ghana learn the true responsibilities of the role of majority and minority parties in governance, a multiparty system will curtail progress, nurture tribalism, bribery and corruption and the love for tribe at the expense of the nation.
  
  The chaos in parliament and in state institutions are the result of a premature practice of multiparty system in Ghana. Where in Ghana's multiparty system is the development of Ghana and welfare of all Ghanaians the priority preamble of the constitution of any party?
  
  Ghana will never realize its ordained and manifested leadership role in the liberation of SSA nations for as long as we practice multiparty system. How can we change political party government administrations if either the NPP or NDC come to continue the "good work" of the previous administration? In our infantile understanding of politics, we change government administrations because they were bad for the plurality of the citizens; why then continue with works of previous governments?

  Sékou Touré, the President of Guinea, came to the rescue of Kwame Nkrumah, the deposed President of Ghana, and invited him to Guinea. Nkrumah arrived in Guinea on March 2, 1966, accompanied by his bodyguards and a few loyal civil servants. Upon arrival at the Conakry
  
  Osagyefo Dr. Kwame Nkrumah’s influence extended even to Guinea’s currency, with his image appearing on the Guinean syli note and coin, specifically the 5-Sylis note and 1000 Sylis coin, between 1971 and 1985.

The conditions were as follows: 1) Rehabilitation and Clearance of Charges: Nkrumah’s complete rehabilitation in the eyes of the Ghanaian people, lifting all charges pending against him. 2) Release of Nkrumah’s Allies: Release of all Nkrumah’s allies still held in Ghanaian jails. 3) Removal of Threat of Arrest: Removal of the threat of arrest hanging over Nkrumah’s followers who had chosen to remain with him in exile. 4) Official Welcome and Honors: An official welcome by the Ghanaian government of Nkrumah’s remains, with all the honors due a deceased chief of state.

  The reign of President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo may have long been over since January 7, 2025, but the very people who helped him during his 8 years in office may not all been enjoying their ‘retirements’ so well, or so quietly.
  
  And this is for reasons aligned to promises and what appears to be a robust aim by the John Dramani Mahama government, which took over from the past one, to prosecute any forms of corruption that arose during the former administration.
  
  These formed part of campaign promises by John Mahama and his National Democratic Congress (NDC), coming into the 2024 Election, and so far, they have been determined on achieving that.
  
  Caught up in that, have been a number of appointees of Akufo-Addo who have ended up several investigations, or, in simple terms, whose names have been linked to controversial wealth that people believe may be, somehow, corruption related.
  
  In this GhanaWeb article, let us take a look at some of the appointees under Akufo-Addo whose wealth came into question, generating national conversations.
  
  In each of these cases, something happened that brought their cases into the public light, prompting national discussions and great interest.
  
  Eugene Arhin
  
  Eugene Arhin was the Director of Communications at the Presidency under Nana Akufo-Addo for the 8 years he was in office.
  
  In 2021, a divorce case with his wife made it into the public, where his wife was demanding for certain reliefs in the separation process.
  
  As part of the things she listed, she made mention of some of the properties owned by Eugene Arhin and these revelations, in the eyes of the public, generated a lot of conversations.
  
  For many, did the Director of Communications at the Presidency, Eugene Arhin, amass all that in a space of four years, or during his time in public office?
  
  
  
  Gloria Assan Arhin, his wife at the time, prayed the Accra High Court to grant her divorce request and also give her a number of properties, including a five-bedroom residential property (which was intended to be the matrimonial home of the parties) situated on a two-plot of land lying at East Legon in Accra; a four-storey building comprising 16 separate flats/apartments situated on a parcel of land at Bubiashie in Accra which land was acquired from a family friend of the petitioner.
  
  She also asked for a storey building being constructed which comprised of 16 separate flats/apartments situated at Tuba-Weija in Accra.
  
  These were but just three of the over twenty properties she sought after as part of the divorce.
  
  Kwadwo Owusu Afriyie (Sir John)
  
  Sir John, a former General Secretary of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), became the Chief Executive Officer of the Forestry Commission of Ghana until his death.
  
  After his death, his will became public, generating another widespread conversation among Ghanaians. It involved a tall list of 75 properties, including houses, parcels of land, bank accounts, investments, businesses, guns and clothes.
  
  His will also raised public concerns following the discovery that he owned lands at the Achimota Forest. This was also because President Akufo-Addo had, at the time, signed an Executive Instrument that said part of the Achimota Forest was no longer a forest reserve.
  
  Critics said the move was a ploy to get the land into the hands of the ruling elite, an accusation the government vehemently denied.
  
  Sir John’s ownership of parcels of lands at the Achimota Forest appeared to have heightened the deep-seated mistrust of the government and its actions.

  The last person in this list of Akufo-Addo appointees whose wealth have courted public conversations is the former Director-General of the National Signals Bureau, Kwabena Adu-Boahene.
  
  He and his wife, Angela Adjei-Boateng, were recently detained by the Attorney General’s office following his arrest at the Kotoka International Airport (KIA).
  
  Following his detention, Attorney General Dr Dominic Akuritinga Ayine revealed at a press conference on Monday, March 24, 2025, a list of properties acquired by both suspects since 2018.
  
  This, he said, was established through painstaking investigations by the EOCO and the AG’s office, indicating that the properties acquired were bought using embezzled state funds.

  He didn't have one because there was a fight of who becomes the vice. Nkrumah wanted either Dwira (an Asante in fact he settled on Dwira finally) or Sackey (an effutu-fantse); but Kojo Botsio, Gbedemah and the rest felt Nkrumah's choice were "new comers" than them who have been with him for long. Because of that and to avoid envy continually, he opted not to have any at all until someone emerges as a clear favorite who no one will envy.
  
  But it did not even last long for Gbedema and co to show signs of dissent. Nkrumah in his wisdom felt he has given the best position of finance to Gbedema who was performing excellently (until pride and greed entered him - probably due to the vice presidency issue).
  
  In here Nkrumah was thinking like the white man, but he should have considered the african mindset. Because for the black man even if his current position is the best for his country, just because a new comer whom they came before him (even if he was better suited for the position) like (Dwira who had excellent foresight - that levelled with the way Nkrumah processes or do stuff), they will fight for the higher position irrespective of whether they can do it or not. Nkrumah should have realized the the level of greed of the black man is 10 times that of the white man.

  Please lbrahim the coup of 24th February 1966 that overthrew President Nkrumah was planned and executed by Commissioner of Police, John William Kofi Harrley, Commissioner of Police (CID), Anthony K Deku and Colonel Emmanuel Kwasi Kotoka, Commander of the Second lnfantry Brigade, based in Kumasi.Then Colonel Kotoka roped in his Brigade Major, Major Akwasi Amankwaa Afrifa. So Colonel Kotoka and Major Afrifa moved the troops from Kumasi to Accra to effect the coup in Accra. Please see pages 21 and 44 of Dark Days in Ghana by Kwame Nkrumah.

One of the problems the Ashantis broke away for Dr Kwame Nkrumah CPP and government was that Dr Kwame Nkrumah was using Ashanti Cocoa farmers foreign exchange earnings to develop the Northern Regions of Ghana as well as giving the Northerners- free education and scholarships-whilst Ashanti cocoa farmers to are the backbone of Ghana economy children-had no scholarships. That was why Dr Kwame Nkrumah instituted Cocoa Marketing Board-CMBs Cocoa farmers children scholarships.

If you love Ghana, you will love Ghanaians, If you want to understand what I am saying, then just look from 2017 to 2024, how the NPP led by Fmr Prez Nana Addo treated Ghanaians even including his own peers to the extent that they could not withdraw from their own savings to even cater for their health needs whilst subjecting far too many of the rest to economic torture.
