Secondly, if Akafia really just freely opened the doors to a group of soldiers in serious overthrow plot, he would have instantly been arrested and locked for his own good. The other option, if he resisted seriously, would be to neutralize him. The plot would still continue.

Ben K. Akafia was not a Major General (2 Star) in 2000. Even, the service commanders under him were above that rank. He was appointed Chief of Defence Staff in 1996 and promoted to the rank of Lieutenant General (3 Star). The service commanders under him were all promoted to 3-Star later.

The CDS would not have risked his life going to merely confront coup plotters. Defence Intelligence would have been directed to effect arrest.

Having occupied the role of Army Chief of Staff from January 31, 1992 to October 1, 1996, he rose to the enviable position of Chief of Defence Staff from October 1, 1996 to March 15, 2001.

This account is not correct. Yes there were attempts to have the NDC or specifically JJR hand on to power. The motorway landing was a military exercise designed to be carried out on a date that happened to be between the main election and the runoff. The Ex attracted criticisms, and it was scaled down considerably but carried out after the runoff. It was the Generals who were at a meeting..The CDS, Akafia, Army Commanda, Airforce Commander, Navy Commander, Chief of Staff, GOC Southern and Northern Commands. The rumor and it was just a rumor was that one of the suggested the NDC should not hand over. It was rumored that Akafia asked, what if the situation escalated? Some of the General assured him they could handle it. Akafia was alleged to have told them "not on my head as CDS" and insisted the NDC should prepare to hand over. Further rumors are that he even reported to the president elect JAK. Only the General present or Akafia himself can tell the truth about what transpired that day. Otherwise, it is all rumor in uniform.
