You're just naive and ignorant about a lot at the health sector but won't shut up too...for your information, there's already a programme called GEMP where Physician Assistant, Nurses with Degrees, Pharmacists, Lab Scientist, Biochemist etc can do medicine in less years to become qualified Medical Doctors. Legon, UCC, UDS already doing it. KNUST started this year, UHAS will start next year. So don't think Nurses, Physician Assistants, etc can't become medical Doctors. There are a lot of Doctors who didn't start medicine right from SHS but did other programs at the Univ and later did medicine. People who did Nursing and other programs weren't that bad academically.

This guy is a liar. Nothing stopped physician assistants nor “experienced” nurses to train as doctors, if they obtain the appropriate qualifications to enter medical school.
In fact, there are a few nurses and physician assistants who worked hard to obtain the necessary entry qualifications to enter medical school, and eventually became doctors. That pathway is not usually the case, but is not and has never been a closed door issue.
If the minister is alluding to the “alternate pathway” of medical education which allowed working individuals to work while taking courses to be doctors (as briefly trialled in the UK), that is a different ball game. This alternate pathway of training doctors has been halted in the UK, possibly for obvious reasons.
The lack of regional hospitals in some regions is not a manpower problem, but rather a health services policy and planning issue which can only be dealt with by the ministry of health. If a conscious decision is made to set up regional hospitals in the regions that currently lack such is made by the ministry of health, this can be achieved, obviously with the accompanying financial obligations.

The issue in Ghana's health system now is not even the numbers, it is the quality of young doctors and their dedication to work both of which are of lower standards than 10 or 15 years ago. You have young doctor idle at home for up to a year before they even start housemanship. And when they start they are chasing money like they see their classmates politicians doing.

Being trained to be a physician is not like training to become a nurse or physician assistant. Some knowledge of Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry is necessary to formulate the basis of a doctor interviewing and making a diagnosis based on information sought and received. We already have enough self trained doctors in Northern Ghana who are constantly injecting and killing innocent people with no consequence from the Ministry of Health. The Honorable Health Minister could convene a number of doctors and nurses and try to understand the profession before bringing up plans that will diminish the quality of medicine in already deprived areas of Ghana. Medicine is not physics. Thanks for finally thinking about the health of the Northerners. Some diaspora physician can volunteer to aide you in probably bringing up a Nurse Practitioner program to assist in areas where physicians are scarce rather than spending money on people who could not pass their high School chemistry exams.. Thanks. YEN

Hei, young inexperienced man Akandoh, if you didn't experience working life to know the real meanings and workings of job experience, do not come and cause chaos in the medical field, OKAY. Who told you that this suggestion of yours is good enough to become policy? Yes indeed a few of those nurses and physician assistants could have been fantastic medical doctors but for their lack of financial ability, they couldn't achieve their dreams. And it is happening aaaall over the world, and in such cases the nurses and physician assistants themselves make the move to escalate their skill by enrolling for medical school education. Why should you force it? Who are you to say "enunti embra me di eba ni se.." WHO ARE YOU, Mintah? who are you? Majority of these nurses and physician assistants couldn't perform at that top 10% level in science at the high school level and this is not to mock them, but the fact is that, that was their strength. It is not their fault, thus, they being nurses and physician assistants is JUST EXACTLY WHERE THEY OUGHT TO BE according to their aptitudinal abilities. Why do you want to make this a POLICY which is very dangerous. LET THOSE OF THEM WHO NATURALLY HAVE THE BRAINS AND APTITUDE TO APPLY FOR IT. The universities are there, infact, they've been there all along and they haven't rejected anyone who passed their aptitude tests. I have personally encountered very old and senior nurses who can't even speak proper english, can't fix cannulas properly, however, are very good at following their doctors instructions perfectly by administering drugs on time, according to prescription once they have the instructions from the doctors. THAT IS WHAT GOD HAS ALLOWED THEM TO DO, SO ALLOW THEM TO REMAIN NURSES etc. Who are you Akandoh to say YOU have brought in a law? Who are you? you are on record to have only been a dinning hall prefect before becoming a deputy minister. Hey akorlaa, don't bring yuasef, okay. Go and park somewhere.
