The former vice president's father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia, belongs to the first generation of national politicians in northern Ghana after the Protectorate of the Northern Territories of the Gold Coast was merged with Ashanti and the Gold Coast Colony.

Mumuni Bawumia had been the State Secretary of the Mamprusi Native Authority after which he became Secretary to the Nayiri and Clerk of the Mamprusi District Council in 1952. The mother of the former vice president was a niece to one Yiremiga who was installed the Bawku Naba in 1952.

The former vice president with such solid percentage cannot deceive Ghanaians of having poor parents and creating the impression thst he had to scratch through his claws to hecime what he is today.

Ghanaians erroneously associate poverty with humility and wealth with arrogance. That's the emotional keyboard which the former Veep is playing and none shoukd fall for it

After 1966 he went to study law. In the 1979s he was a big lawyer and big time farmer in the Northern Regional Minister.
President Liman made him chairman of cocoa marketing board till the coup in 1983.
In the PNDC he was made ambassador to Saudi Arabia till 1992.
He then became chairman of council of state from 1993 to 2001. Mumuni Bawumia is popularly called Maggie Cube because he has served in almost every government since independence till his death.
This is the background of Mahamadu Bawumias father. His mother was also a very accomplished woman and the sister of Pro Nabila former President of the National House of Chiefs.
He Mahamadu Bawumias rode on his fathers name to get to Bank of Ghana and the rest is history.

Mahamuda and his senior brother Baba got government scholarships to study abroad when the father was the president of the council of state.
He was brought up in one of the largest houses in Tamale at Agric Ridge in Tamale (on the way to the old Bishop's residence in Tamale. He was among the top 1% elite kids from the northern part of Ghana. He has never tasted any hardship in his life before.

Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia was a Ghanaian politician, lawyer and the paramount chief of Kperiga in the then Northern region of Ghana.[1] He was chairman of the council of state in the 4th republic from 1993 to 2000.

Career
Bawumia was a member of the national assembly of Ghana from 1951 to 1966. He served as clerk to the district council of Mamprusi and then to the Mamprusi state council. He was member of the Northern People's Party and later the United Party.[2] He defected away from the United Party whilst still in parliament and cross-carpeted to the Convention People's Party in 1958.[3] After this, he served in a number of ministerial roles in the governments of Kwame Nkrumah. He was minister for works and housing, special development commissioner for development of Accra, deputy minister, northern regional minister and then a local government minister.

He was selected to be chief of Kperiga in present-day West Mamprusi District of the North East Region of Ghana. In 1978, he was made interim chairman of the management committee of the Cocoa Marketing Board. In 1988, the PNDC government appointed him as Ghana's Ambassador to Saudi Arabia. He was elected chairman of the Council of State from 1993 to 2000, thus becoming the first chairman of the council of state in the 4th Ghanaian Republic. His son Mahamudu Bawumia is the Vice-President of Ghana.[4][5]

Bawumia's father, Alhaji Mumuni Bawumia was a teacher, lawyer and politician, a Mamprugu Royal and Chief of the Kperiga Traditional Area at the time of his death in September 2002.

He was a founding member of the Northern Peoples' Party alongside Chief S. D. Dombo, Chief Abeifa Karbo, Yakubu Tali, the Tolon Naa, and J. A. Braimah, Kabachewura.[6][7]

The Northern Peoples Party, together with the National Liberation Movement and other opposition political parties, later merged into the United Party, the forebear of the current New Patriotic Party.[8]

Alhaji Bawumia served under various Ghanaian governments in various capacities, including member of the Northern Territories Council, the Gold Coast Legislative Assembly, a Member of Parliament of the First Republic, Northern Regional Minister, and Ambassador to Saudi Arabia.[9]

Alhaji Bawumia was awarded the high national honour of Member of the Order of the Star of Ghana in March 1999. He served as chairman of the Council of State, under the presidency of J. J. Rawlings from, 1993 to 2000 in the 4th republic.[10][11]

In September 2021, his mother, Hajia Mariama Bawumia, died in Accra, at age 81, and was buried later beside her husband in Kperiga, near Walewale in the Northeast Region.[12][13][14][15]

Personal life
He was married to Mariama Bawumia (1939-2021). They had five children together, including Mahamudu Bawumia,[16][1][17] although Mumuni Bawumia had offspring by other consorts.[18][1]

I do not support the assertion by Bawumia, for he is a damned liar but is Kwarteng saying because Bawumia's father was a council of state member, he couldn't come from a poor background? Kwarteng should learn that Muslim men are poligamists with many wives and children. The chain of dependants on one individual could determine the prospects of the household.
