In 2016, Akuffool Addo accused President Mahama of corruption and ran a campaign heavily based on this narrative. He promised Ghanaians that, if elected, he would establish the Office of the Special Prosecutor to investigate and prosecute President Mahama and his appointees, whom he claimed had caused financial loss to the state.

Upon assuming office, Akufool Addo fulfilled his promise by creating the Office of the Special Prosecutor and granting it inordinate powers to deal with President Mahama and his appointees. However, after several investigations, it became clear that there was no evidence of financial crime against President Mahama. From that point, Akuffool Addo appeared to lose interest in the office he had so passionately championed.

Rather than supporting the office to function independently, he allegedly starved it of funding, rendering it ineffective—especially when investigations began turning toward members of his own administration. This led to the resignation of the first Special Prosecutor, Martin Amidu, who, upon his exit, described President Akufo-Addo as “the mother serpent of corruption,” citing a lack of genuine commitment to fighting corruption.

Ironically, the very trap Akufo-Addo set for President Mahama now seems to have ensnared his own leadership. The law of karma appears to be unfolding before the eyes of Ghanaians.
