Bring Her Home: The Unfinished Journey of Yaa Asantewaa
It is a blow to the dignity of Ghanaians that even after more than six decades of independence, Yaa Asantewaa, the fearless mother of our resistance, still lies buried in exile — far away from the sacred land she fought to defend.
It is a national shame that Ghana, a proud nation born out of the struggles and sacrifices of her children, has not yet repatriated the remains of Yaa Asantewaa — the very woman who rose with unmatched courage to preserve the soul of the Asante Kingdom and, by extension, the spirit of the nation.
Yaa Asantewaa was not just a queen mother.
She was:
A military commander who defied the might of the British Empire,
A symbol of resistance, who inspired warriors when men’s courage failed,
A national mother of patriotism, who placed her life and legacy on the line so that future generations might walk free and proud on Ghanaian soil.
To leave her bones in foreign soil, separated from the ancestors she honoured, is to leave an open wound in the heart of our nation.
To let her remain in the Seychelles is to whisper that we have forgotten — and we have not.
Now is the time.
Now is the hour.
Let the government, the custodians of our heritage, the traditional councils, and the people of Ghana rise together and say:
"Bring her home."
Let her body be returned to Kumasi, to the land that birthed her bravery, to rest among her people — the children of her courage.
Only then shall her journey be complete.
Only then can Ghana truly claim to honour its heroes.
