As a true Ghanaian and African, I celebrate the bravery of Ashanti and say shame to all those making noise about neo-Colonialism yet refusing to acknowledge the spirit of defiance the Ashantis consistently displayed. They unified the interior Akans and brought war to the coast when others were worshiping their slave buyers.

Prior to the rise of Ashanti, the power of AKWAMU was unmatched from Dahomey=Whidah to Wineba, near the borders of present day Ivory Coast. They were the most powerful force behind slavery. Before them, the Arabs with their Fulani and Muslim Jihadists who took slaves across the desert. Akwamu is an admixture of all sorts, they can easily master any language from Twi to Ewe, Ga and Guan. Akwamu supplied the most slaves to the Europeans during the period. They were also the biggest trading partners of the colonists. Denkyira, another Akan State, defeated Akwamu and Ashanti finally subdued Denkyira paving the way for the unification of most of the interior Akans under the umbrella name Ashanti Kingdom. Osei Tutu 1 was a unifier, more or less than a founder because Ashantis existed as separate groups. Bono, Ahafo, Kwahu, parts of Akyem and Akuapem, Denkyira, Twifo, Wassa, Ahanta, Assin and others were all part of this United Ashanti at the time. Those who doubt can refer to pre-colonial maps that should present day Ghana demarcated in three regions: the Coastal Gold Coast Colony, Ashanti and the Northern Territories. In short, all Akan Lands were grouped under ASHANTI whether by mistake or for convenience, except Fanti and Nzema.
Who sold the Akans? It could be any of the allies of the Europeans who pointed to the direction of Ashanti and these allies were mostly coastal people, a significant number of them from Nzema to Weija being Akans themselves. The rest were the Ga and Ewe.

So yes all groups were deep into slave trade, and none are innocent.

You’re very right about Obiri Yeboa and Oti Akenten. Ashanti only came into existence with the unification campaign by Osei Tutu. Two, perhaps three hundred years back, Kumasi had a different name and there was no Ashanti but fragmented Akan Tribes of which Dormaa was the most prominent. But as with the fate of civilizations, the Ashanti of latter years became more powerful and expanded than Dormaa. Remember, Mexico was before the United States but it was the latter that would rise to become a World Power.
