We have seen this decongestion scenario played over and over so many times in the Accra Central Business area with zero results that, I cannot help but to be skeptical about the new Mayors enthusiasm. I think that after similarly dilly-dallying with the problem for years, it has now overgrown both the ability and the competence of the Accra
metropolitan authority as well as the regional body. A concerted body including central govt will have to be set up to deal with this multifaceted problem in a determined way.

This is a brilliant move, though there will be a heavy backlash from some political stooges, ignore them and make Accra great again just like salifu amankwah of AFRC/PNDC era made accra especially kwame nkrumah circle like a sterile medical theatre. It was so clean and orderly. Everyone followed instruction and it worked. Those who failed to do so were whipped or made to do some military drills. Ghana, especially Accra and all regional capitals and towns need the salifu amankwah era discipline reintroduced. Makola was without human traffic. Pavements were all clear and not a sight of filth. We need to reintroduce sanitary inspectors and anyone found breaking sanitary laws should be punished to desilt gutters.

I really don't think there is any need for the new Mayor to travel to Adis Ababa and to interact with their Mayor for tutelage. The new Mayor of Accra should be sufficiently qualified and enlightened so as to know what to do to raise Accra from the doldrums of squalor into a respectable decent looking modern city. If he, like others Mayors of Accra before him are not personally and sufficiently motivated to accomplish this objective, then forget it.

@kumi. I fully agree with you that the Mayor's personal motivation is a decisive factor. That said, I still believe that we can always learn from one another. If Ethiopians are doing well in transforming their cities I see nothing wrong in exchanging ideas with them (unless we think we know it all). Unfortunately, we Africans always undermine ourselves. I am sure if one had proposed that the mayor should travel to Paris, New York, Tokyo, etc you will probably not have any objection to that.

Can AMA also help to end the indiscriminate burning of rubbish in Accra? This practice pollutes the air and poses great danger to public health and survival. What about government or recycling plants buying refuse at even 1 cedi per refuse to recycle? That may prevent prevent burning and the emission of toxic air that we currently have in Accra.
