lol ha ha ha, the Vice Chancellors there now want this so they can have extension for their terms as VCs. They are thinking about themselves. Just check. KNUST used her chancellor to get an extension. UCC is in court over extension. The funniest is UG who got the council to give her 4 more years extension. So asking for this change of years is to enable those who already do not have extensions to get extensions. It's a club! They have not consulted UTAG on this issue whereas it is UTAG that negotiates conditions of service. The current practice is Ok. if you come to the university and you do not work to become a senior lecturer or a professor to qualify for post retirement contract, why should you be there for extra years when there are young PhDs to be employed.

Back in the day, it took a long time to become a professor, so it made sense to keep them around for their experience. But now, many people are getting their PhDs in their late twenties or early thirties. By their forties, they’re already professors and still have over a decade to train the next generation. We don’t need to keep everyone around forever. Honestly, the current system should be scrapped. The government should only retain those doing serious research—and they should be able to earn from that research too.
