Anyone who condones the behaviour of our health professionals in all our hospitals should wait when their family members visit there. The lack of basic respect for patients in Ghana is appalling and very sad. I am very upset writing this because I have witnessed many instances where patients are treated like criminals in our hospitals. Just shut up you idiot and educate yourself. Human lives come first before your stupid politics. I hope you don’t experience the wickedness in our hospitals and health centres.

I have come to realize that many health professionals are not there to save lives, they are there because of the relative job security and status associated with being a doctor, pharmacist, nurse, etc.
I went to Legon Hospital once in the evening and was directed to a consulting room. I knocked and a voice said to wait outside. I could hear a man and a woman chatting inside so I assumed it was a rather jovial exchange between doctor and patient. For over 20
minutes I waited outside, other patients had come around. So I knocked again and entered, and saw that it was two doctors inside just having a good chat. The lady doctor had apparently come to replace the gentleman, but I can tell you there was no sense of urgency about either of them. I mean, if your shift is done, you neither hang around nor make time for a chit chat when patients are waiting on you.
I came back out to sit for at least ten more minutes and told the other patients what I had witnessed. After some time, I still wasn’t being called in, so I knocked and entered and just took my seat.
Believe me the woman had apparently heard me “badmouthing” her to the other patients, and the kind of contempt with which I was treated!! No humanity, no empathy. I told her I had done a test and came out positive. I had with me lab results, but she wouldn’t look at it.
She just prescribed meds and asked me to go to the pharmacy. Taken aback by her curt attitude, I didn’t leave immediately. She then yelled at me to go for my medications. I was in utter shock.
The high regard I accorded to doctors ended there and then.

Where is the money to pay them? The previous government was irresponsible employing people with no work to do and struggling to pay them. How do you think governments get money to pay its employees? Why don’t you employ all Ghanaians who have qualifications. Sometimes we need to think before talking? If you want the government to act on employment, you should condemn the way the previous government handled the affairs of the country, you should condemn the high level corruption the NPP government instituted but not condone it and blame it on a new government which is just settling down.

The Health Minister is doing a good job. Other ministers and high Government officials should emulate him and go to the field and see what is happening on the ground. There is a lot of work to be done regarding our attitude to each other. Our service providers have no sense of customer service and treating people politely. The minister was right to point out that man's attitude towards him. If he could behave that way towards his sector minister only God knows how he treats others including the patients in the hospital. It is high time we start prosecuting people in Ghana for negligence of duty. Otherwise, I am afraid there will never be a change in our attitude at work.

The equipment for the specialized procedure was not available at the Tamale Teaching Hospital. It is a hospital where some Ghanaian medical students are trained to become qualified medical doctors. In other words, that medical center is not fit to be labeled as a hospital. Just look: 4 beds in the ICU emergency unit that serves the entire Northern Region. You know what? It's most likely our politicians take foreign loans that cover a fully equipped hospital but merely put up the buildings and instal selected gadgets. The difference disappears into deep private pockets. There is no doubt that there is no single health facility in Ghana that qualifies to be called a Hospital. You see the beautiful names: Tamale Teaching Hospital, Cape Coast Teaching Hospital, University of Ghana Medical Center etc etc but they don't fit to be classified among hospitals. Our Presidents and our Parliamentary Speakers and our Vice Presidents and all know the truth, the unspoken truth. Perhaps Naana Opoku Agyeman the Vice President shall, one day, tell Ghanaians the truth; yes, the whole truth.
