What exploration have companies like Akonta done before being granted the so called Mining Leases? Offshore oil exploration licences are given out for 7 years in Ghana. Oil Companies are only granted oil production licences when they make commercial discovery of oil on the basis of oil reserves after successful exploration. The total exploration and oil production licence period is 30 years. Offshore oil exploration is very costly and requires application of a lot of new technologies. Mineral exploration on land is less costly and doesn’t require as much sophisticated technology. The questions are why are our mineral exploration licences granted without term limits and why are these licences used automatically for “mining” ( read Galamsey) without declaration of commercial gold reserves. There was a time when mineral exploration companies had to submit periodic reports on their exploration results to the Geological Survey Department. It is a tragedy that Martin Ayisi, CEO of Minerals Commission is still at post after turning a blind eye to the large scale destruction of our forests and water bodies in the name of mineral exploration licences.
