You do not have to appoint mostly Muslims or Northerners (I am not saying they are not qualified or they are not Ghanaians) in Akan dominated areas. He should let the people feel they are part of his government by appointment some of the local people. You can't tell me there are no qualified Akans in these Akan dominated areas. You can check whether there is an Akan appointment in any part of the Northern region. This is my two dollar observation

This is a common error that many tribal bigots in Akan areas make.
There are many Akan areas which have become Northern majority areas, especially in the Bomo, Bono East, Ahafo and Ashanti Regions. So, it is not strange that people with Northern names become MMDCEs.
Take note that people with Northern names have continuously won competitive elections in these areas. Does this not tell you that Northerners are the majority in these areas?
The Northern predominance is purely the product of migration for generations. There are definitely more people of Northern descent in Southern Ghana than Southerners in Northern Ghana. In fact, it is believed that there are more Northerners in Southern Ghana, than Northerners in Northern Ghana, and these numbers will increase.
The NDC's continuous growth in Ashanti, Bono, Bono East and Ahafo regions is partly attributable to the growing numbers of Northerners in these regions. For several reasons, including mistreatment and insults by the host Akan population, Northerners vote NDC as their default party. They believe that the NDC will always stand with them, just as Akans predominantly vote for NPP.
The signs are that Northerners and their descendants will become the majority in many Akan regions in the next few years.
