The airport was named after him because when he was killed his severely mutilated body was found there.
Secondly, the action that led to his killing wasn't a counter coup but it was plot to eliminate him because he himself wasn't ambitious to lead the government but was even nursing possibilities of Kwame Nkrumah coming back.
With the perpetrators fearing reprisals for the gruesome manner he was murdered, they have to institute actions to appease aggrieved members of the society and the Ghana army.
The Trust fund even commissioned a song to be composed in his honour and it's quite touching and solemn.

Under the military regime the Airport won international recognition and international flights. Is that too be withdrawn. Are all the awards won within that period be withdrawn? Or only that of Lt. Gen. E.K. Kotoka?

At that time, the Chief of Defence Staff, Major General Afari had traveled outside the country and Major General Bawa, Army Chief of Staff and Deputy Chief of Defence Staff was in command. Colonel Kotoka led his soldiers to the residence of Major General Bawa and when Major General Bawa refused to surrender or join them, Colonel Kotoka shot Major General Bawa dead in front of his wife and children and the seven soldiers stationed at the Bawa residence were also shot dead on the orders of Colonel Kotoka.
