What if Sam George also decides to speak Dangme, Okoe Vanderpuye speaks Ga, Ayariga speaks Hausa, Agbojah speaks Ewe, etc etc..... Will there be any progress made in the house? Please English is our NATIONAL LANGUAGE. It is the language of Parliamentary business. Mr. Speaker should never allow this to fester. English is the language of opportunity. That is why it is a prerequisite to any next level of education.

What's this paranoia about Twi? Who said any non Twi person should speak Twi? Let each speak their own language. Just because you haven't seen it done doesn't mean that people cannot speak different languages at one meeting. At international conferences, one can speak Japanese, Chinese, French or whatever, while simultaneous interpreters translate simultaneously into enough languages for everyone to understand. You just put on your earphone and tune into the particular frequency where your language is being broadcast. In Ghana, we just have to get interpreters to translate into English. That would mean good paying jobs for translators and I interpreters. Maybe, it's about time!

People who are advocating for local languages to be spoken in parliament do not half know what they are talking about. In fact they are closet anarchists who are not mindful of the fact of how our local languages are unable to cope with the exigency of the modern world. How can any right thinking person wish to replace a language (English) of approximately one million words and over 4 billion speakers with anyone of our local languages which do not exceed 20,000 words and perhaps at best, a few million speakers each? It is said that there are about 80 local languages in Ghana and even though many of us are tolerant of each others ethnic tongues, I do not think that most would be tolerant of the idea of officially imposing other ethnic tongues over their own. Any drift in that direction could rather trigger tribal antagonisms in a country where we have so far done pretty well in respecting each other's ethnic peccadillos.

I think its a national discourse to use English soly for national transactions or business. But because Ashantis in particular don't have paternal control over their families, their girl-children born indiscriminately which makes it difficult for formal education. This is why they as a region are craving for twi to be nationalised so that their illiterate folks can understand. They've succeeded in capturing Accra and the Ga language is no more attractive in the city. The akans have a bullying culture which they try to impose on any tribe anywhere in the world. If you've ever travelled by Delta Airlines you would have known what I'm talking about. Thay are lazy in learning languages. Instead of teaching them how to choose words they teach them how to use 'sebi' that is why Afenyo Markins and his cohort Annor Dompreh flatten their tongues in parliament all times. It is worrying.

That's the way to go! Lets shed this particular colonial shackle of language and reset Africa back to the time before 1884. I make this observation out of personal international experience traveling and living in Europe. Every country worth it's salt must as prove of its total sovereignty be able to have it's own language. They don't care about foreigners who come in whether for business or pleasure. That's why we groom translators! Africa's efforts to develop are thwarted because our plans are there for every enemy who understands English or French to read and ensure we don't succeed. Some will say but WHICH one should we use in Ghana? Simple, DEVELOP the major ONE! Any minor group that won't accept is given full autonomy to carry on as a nation on their own. If for instance Volta decides they won't accept Twi, and the TRUTH is Twi is the best option for the language project, we allow them to form their own country to carry on as they see fit. No gun fights necessary.
Historical example: Norway and Sweden. They were one country but separated. Norway developed the New Norsk(ie the new language) and are still on it because for a language to survive it must be dynamic. In Germany there are many minority ethnic groups but they agreed to ONE language for the sake of unity and development. Everyone knew Lenin of Russia could speak the Queen's English because he lived in England but when he became the leader of Russia he never spoke it in any international engagement. He used translators so could have a window to backtrack in any deals he later found unfavorable, blame the translators. Lets ditch English and develop our own national language as a new 'Generational Agenda'. Have you asked yourselves why a foreign country, United Kingdom will spend billions of £s and the French, billions of €s over decades to make Africans learn their language? Can you try that in Europe? They won't allow you to destroy their culture. We are so gullible that even the Chinese are sneaking their own on us! It's laughable when you listen to how MOST parliamentarians struggle with their imitated English, bad pronunciation and all, that's why it always seems like they are angry when expressing themselves. Ghanaians must forgive them. It's not their fault. Good news, The Malians are ditching French for BAMBARA which is spoken even in certain parts of Ghana, Ivory Coast, Liberia, Sierra Leone, Guinea, Gambia and Eastern Senegal. Finally some wise Africans have decided to throw away the cultural burden of 1884/1885, the Partition of Africa.

My friend stop daydreaming. It is too late in the day to continue seeing mirage. In the world we live in today, even the concept of national sovereignty is giving way to the more powerful regional and continental options. Hanging on to obscure rural linguistic concepts that have very little correlation with the modern world in which we live in, will only further slow down our snail-pace development. Even a powerful country like China with its hypersonic pace of development, wittingly exports over a million of its youth to the Americas and Europe each year to pick up the linguistic, cultural and technological essentials of the world's major languages that have to date, made the world what it is today so as to simultaneously form an interface as well as the database for further development.
You may wish to know that over the course of history, many thousands of languages all over the world have become extinct because the societies that spoke these languages became economically irrelevant and crashed. It is as simple as that.
The subject and importance of language has to be discussed dispassionately without the base sentiments of ethnic or racial bigotry and cultural imperialism. Other than that, I am afraid that we are headed over the cliff.

You see, there are valid points in the arguments. However, I wish to say that China speaks Chinese which has enabled them to develop so quick.
Can anyone mention an European country that uses a language from Africa as their official language?
It is time we understand that our language is our spirit.
Take the case of Peace FM and UTV. Which station has kept its audience for a longer time that these stations? Joy and City are only listened to by educated few in Ghana and the majority. The Akan stations have closed up some gaps in terms of knowledge with people able to contribute to national growth because people can now express themselves. Even the educated ones, how many can express themselves well in English?
In South African parliament, Swahili is used in communicating proceedings of the house.
We need to accept that language is a spirit and immediately you take up another county's language you are bound to remain a third class country for good.
In the developed countries of the world, mention one that uses a different official language apart from their mother tongue?
Thanks
