well, i digress. i think gh news agency should fall under the presidency and regulate all news being disseminated to the ppl. the news should be controlled. however, the information ministry should be an established ministry on its own. infact, there should be an information minister as well. You see, the work of the information ministry is to ensure that issues of the day are supported nd disseminated to other arms of the govt using the most transparent and efficient methods. In essence,
the role of the Information Commissioner of Canada is to ensure government transparency. staff of the ministry should be made up of a workforce of investigators, lawyers, access to information and privacy analysts, public affairs experts, human resources and finance specialists, and security and IT professionals......Information Commissioner of Canada

Past govts, whilst pretending to give credence to the existence of the Ministry of Information, actually did things in a way that served to undermine that ministry. The immediate past govt for instance, loaded the communications dept of the Office of the President with scores of Party functionaries who on a daily basis, freely presented multiple news and information about govt. This made the major functions of the Ministry and the ISD, redundant.

Ghanaians will be eagerly awaiting how President Mahama intends to disseminate information to rural areas that for all intents and purposes almost completely cut off from the rest of the country. Perhaps, perhaps the days of "cinema vans" are just not quite over yet. "Cinema vans" may still be relevant if modernized and adapted to take on board present day technologies- they can remain a powerful tool in disseminating information to the least accessible parts of the country.
Until Ghanaians in the remotest villages have access to reliable electricity and reliable internet connectivity, achieving an effective restructuring of the ISD will remain a herculean task if not impossible dream. At least the President must be credited with thinking in the right direction.

The Ministry of Information has been a white elephant for several decades. Mahama has done extremely well to dismantle this largely unproductive behemoth that has been a drain on govt revenue which could have been better used for other more productive national purposes. Both the Ministry of Information and the ISD - in collaboration with a retinue of dizzy politicians, shot themselves in the foot for abusing the need to live up to expectation or any relevance in the massive explosion of information in this era of prolific social media activities. Indeed both the Ministry as well as its baby, the ISD, have become virtually irrelevant in the prevailing seamless maelstrom of information dissemination in today's world. Other areas of the Ministry, including the legal and record-keeping aspects should be transferred to the communications Ministry.
All that any Ghanaian living in the rural as well as in urban areas needs, to be up to date with information and news is the availability of CHEAP electricity to power their computers and smart phones. After that, they can access more information and news on Ghana, Africa and the entire world, than their relatively miniscule brains can ever absorb
Today, one local website manned by a couple of kids can, within a given period of time, outdo the entire workforce of hundreds of govt paid workers in the ISD.
Really? Do all villages have electricity and TV sets 11 months ago
