You are very right but sometimes society has problems with ex convicts. Some come from the Prisons more criminalized and dangerous. This makes it difficult for some members of the community, including their own families finding it difficult to accept them back into their fold. The sad thing too is that some people are sent to prison for crimes that they didn’t commit but had no lawyers to represent them.
I think Christians, Moslems and other religious groups should frequent our Prisons, share the Word of Allah or God with Prisoners to help them not to go back to their old criminal ways.
I chanced to take my students to visit the Prison and to see how Prison is like in Uncle Sam’s place. We met a young man who was crying uncontrollably. I later learned that he was imprisoned for an assault, a charge he denies but he had no experienced lawyer to help him. He could also not pay for his fines. Back to school, l discussed with Authorities if students and staff can make a contribution to pay his fines, and get a lawyer to appeal his conviction. The students and staff contributed overwhelmingly but the assaulted person learned of his story and appealed to the legal system to pardon the Guy. He has been integrated into the community but what surprises me most is that he goes around neighborhoods to help people, especially the elderly to clean their houses and do their laundry for them. Can you believe that his volunteer work makes him earn more money than the average worker, including young Teachers.
Let us try to help ex convicts. The only problem is that one has to be careful with such helps because some of the convicts return from the Prison more criminal and dangerous.. of we want to help ex convicts, let the Police and the society be involved before we become victims.

Treatment of prisoners in prison by officers goes a long way to affect their eventual absorption into their communities. Inhuman treatments like how they're fed, how they slept and live in general needs to be considerably improved for the prisoners' mental well being to accept the communities they're being settled in. Some were wrongly jailed, some knew there are worse offenders who are untoucherable due to corrupt officials and their connections. So simply put, improve upon your inhuman treatment of the prisoners, so they'd be in the right mental attitude to settle down after terms in prison.
