For me, he is the most corroupt President ever known in Ghana! He came as president with a greater humility- receiving less than 2,000 Old Cedis as his salary in year 2001.
Then after 2004 in his second term as president, his love for money started in earnest! His own party Chairman, Haruna Esseku, a former Transport Minister in Prof. Busia government in the late 1960/early 70s and a longtime friend of Kufuor who himself was a Deputy Minister then; accused him as a "greedy" president, as he Kufuor was behaving like the party's cashier. According to Mr Harruna Essesku, Kufuor was receiving "kick backs" from Contractors performing for Ghana.
Kufuor is a "lover of money" but shielded himselves by paying heavy sums of monies to the Media including specific senior journalists who acted as "rapid response group" and were tasked to "kill" detrimental news about his person and goverment! So till today, Kufuor's image has been white-washed and continue to remain so. Kufuor's government is the only one in Ghana that did not receive any probe after his tenure in office!
Kufuor's dubious oil agreements still remains a "taboo" to be mentioned in Ghana! Some of such agreements specifies that "not a drop of Ghana's own oil must remain on a the Ghanaian soil"! Again, there is an agreement that goes to say that "Ghana must creat a "Heritage Fund" in a foreign Bank account where part of Ghana's oil proceeds must be locked permanently for "future" use and the account attracting a minute interest 0,05%. This arrangement is very scandlous since Ghana picks foreign loans at the rate between 7-8.5% pa!
Am still horrified by such arrangements. The Ghanaian media has usual kept such corroupt practice by Kufuor under cover!
In general, Kufuor's oil Agreements stinks! It took his successor, ex Prez Prof Mills to lift Ghana's share from Kufuor's 10% share to the present 13%?
Kufuor did his best to amass huge sums of money and greater wealth for himself and family, leaving Ghanaians even much more poor than he came to meet, by cleaverly redenominating the Ghana Cedi; but did nothing about Cedi depreciation! It is on record that Kufuor shored up the Cedi with 1.2 billion dollars in the next 18 months to the tail end of his regime. He did this to "blind" Ghanaians into believing that he has been able to stablize the Cedi whiles in fact inflation went up by 35% same period!
The Bui Hydro Dam meant to generate electricity power for Ghanaians only works for 4 hours daily! Kufuor's Ministers and close working associates has failed to surrounder State Documents upon leaving office!
There is more damning news about ex Prez Kufuor than what flushes into our ears!
