5.7 million students from where? This figure was first quoted by the Finance Minister when he presented the Mid- Year Budget review and they have kept saying it at every given opportunity. I don't know what to say because the Opposition NDC has not challenged this figure so I can assume is correct.
Now this is my problem with this 5.7 million students benefitting from Free SHS. Free SHS started in 2017/18 Academic year so as at the time they quoted the figure 7 streams of BECE students have entered Senior High School ie 2017/2018, 2018/2019, 2019/2020, 2020/2021, 2021/2022, 2022/2023 and 2023/2024 Academic years. (Note that students entering this year that 2024/25 Academic year are not part of the 5.7 million figure)
On the average BECE students who gain admission to SHS and therefore benefitting from Free SHS is about 420000 students annually and that will be about 2.9million students so why 5.7 million students? Maybe I m ignorant of certain facts, if anybody can offer us a proper breakdown that would of great benefit.

Then come into prominence the free allowances for trainee teachers and nurses. Ghana's economy cannot sustain free allowances for trainee nurses and teachers.The nations we go to borrow money from do they give free allowances to trainee nurses and teachers? In these countries teachers and nurses source loans to finance their training. Only SHS students of the poor should benefit from the free SHS policy and not the students of the rich who can afford to pay. Free feeding for all SHS students must stop.Those who can afford to pay must pay for the feeding cost of their children. Unless these populist policies are reviewed Ghana's economy will struggle to improve.
