You need to be tutored. A depreciated cedi is a mixed blessing. It discourages imports and encourages exports.
Albeit cedi-denominated assets are depleting, it is good for Ghana's export market. Since the cedi is cheap, USA importers of goods and services from Ghana can buy more with $1.00(the real value of the USD has increased).
The GHC exchange rates determine the prices of our exports/imports. Consequently, they cannot be too strong (giving fewer cedis for base currencies). That will drive our trading partners to our competitors.
As an illustration, if the cedi is too strong, holding other things constant, importers of Ghana's cocoa beans may shift demand to the Ivory Coast if cocoa beans sell cheaper.
The inflation in Ghana is, substantially, the result of covid. 19 and the effects of the Russia-Ukraine war. You cannot, honestly, discuss Ghana's economy, and burry your head in the sand (like the proverbial ostrich) about them. The USA is still battling with the same exothermic shocks. So, why don't you concern yourself with what is affecting your pocket?
Having studied economics for a long time, economies work in cycles. The reason, despite all the Ph.Ds. in economics, our planet experiences spells of economic booms and recessions. Although, the effects vary from country to country.
What I suggest Ghana does is to expand our export markets and goods and services so we can net in a lot of foreign currencies to prop up the cedi when aggregate demand is overwhelming.
Again, the government should look critically at the import bill and curtail the non-essentials to ease pressure on the cedi.
I will like to remind Professor Hanke that much of Ghana's debt is locked up in all the projects being embarked upon.
Projects have payback periods. It takes years to recoup investments in infrastructural development which are self-financing.
To conclude, the currencies correlate with their underlying economies. Meaning that the stronger an economy, the stronger the currency, and vice versa.
Bearing in mind that the USA has the largest economy in the world, it is not appetizing to compare it to Ghana's. The USD will always be stronger than the GHS (GHC).
The next time I have the opportunity to read your attacks on Ghana, I will like to read your concrete solutions for our economy.
