Long gone are the days when the US was by far the biggest user of crude oil. China has now surpassed the USA in consuming oil and we must not forget that countries like India and many others have seen a massive rises in their use of crude oil and other forms of extracted energy. This means that a decrease in energy consumption alone in the USA may not have as bad an effect as during past global recessions. In fact a far more likely scenario is a massive spike in the price of oil,gas and coal if the Middle East descends into all our regional war- this could potentially create a severe global recession of sorts in the presence of massive increases in the price of hydrocarbon derived energy sources including crude oil.
The world is right now teetering on the edge of catastrophic global war with potential flash points being either the Middle East or Ukraine or both at the same time.
