I think this is positive in the sense that a lot of Ghanaians don't value trees and plants, except those that provide food. When you visit our towns and urban areas, trees are treated like enemies and the urban areas are bare. Some hate trees because it requires extra work to sweep leaves and prune them. It's sad.
In a certain area, where there are hardly any trees, a friend was trimming some branches of a tree in front of his house, which has several trees, when an expatriate stranger walked by. The expatriate woman who also lived in the neighbourhood, actually began begging him not to cut his trees down.

It's not the "thon" aspect that is positive but just the image of a Ghanaian hugging a tree

This is silliness of the highest order. Has this character nothing better to do than hug trees?
Young man do something useful with your life and stop this tomfoolery.

A Ghanaian hugging a tree? Wow! Most Ghanaians see trees as their enemy, especially in urban areas. All plants that cannot be eaten are replaced with concrete on our compounds.
