The answer is a simple one; her majesty the Queen of Britain refused to allow the govt of Ghana to send students to Britain to study. This is something no Ghanaian must forget. In those days a black person was not allowed to study in almost every state in the United States. Moreover, the Eastern Bloc countries allowed Ghanaians to study free of charge. The only problem was the language.

In the news - The Supreme Court declared as unconstitutional, provisions of the Citizenship Act, 2000 (ACT 581) which prohibits a person with dual citizenship from becoming a Chief Justice, Commissioner, Value Added Tax Service, Director-General, Prisons Service, Chief Fire Officer, Chief Director of a Ministry or a rank of Colonel in the army, or other security services.

In a 6-1 majority decision, the court declared Section 16(2)(a) and 16(2)(h)-(l) of the Citizenship Act 2000 (Act 591)

Bright Okyere-Adjekum, a legal practitioner, filed the suit at the apex court.

The issue has to do with allegiance. The law does not allow anyone to owe allegiance to any other country. It does not matter whether one is a labourer or kayayei. Gyakyie Quayson argued that there was a difference between allegiance and citizenship but the Supreme Court ruled that they were the same and that has remained in our statutory books. The judge will have to take an oath of allegiance and he can only do so if he owes no allegiance to any other country.

In appointments of Justices, the law has to be followed, not hallow statements made by shameless stomach Supreme Court Justices who are merely doing Akufo-Addo's bidding. The Chief Justice can make a statement about an issue, but that doesn't necessarily mean that the statement has the same force as a law. Members of Parliament, in deciding on nominations for the Supreme Court, must be guided by the laws dealing with appointments of Justices. There's no use in acting as if Ghana has no laws dealing with such matters and that one must have to defer to some meaningless political political statement coming from politically-tainted Supreme Court Justices. Not only is Akufo-Addo attempting to pack the Supreme Court at the last hour with his cronies, but also he has his lackeys trying to bend laws to facilitate such packing of the Supreme Court.
