Truth be told. Even though Free SHS is in the constitution, it is Dr Paa Kwesi Ndoum, the then presidential candidate of his party, who announced his inent of implementing it. Akufo then hijacked and capitalised on his relatively bigger audience at time and numerous mushroom media outlets to echo it. NDC initially opposed its mass form in 2008 thinking some people could afford to pay. They backed down slightly in 2012 upwards and started it progressively. Prior to that, they had strengthened the livelihood empowerment programme and scholarship for bright but needed children. To compliment the progressively free SHS, they started constructing 200 E-Block Day Senior High Schools across the country.

The National Free SHS campaign had become so popular and unstoppable that he needed to say something too, if even too little too late in 2015, despite vehemently opposing the feasibility of the concept articulated by Nana in 2012, 2015. His was the usual "Nkitinkiti" contribution to SHS fees, since as he so memorably put it he was "not a fool to spend 2 billion of Free SHS, if he had that kind of money" . I rest my case.

If we were to be very honest of ourselves, the npp can not be associated with this noble idea because they boycotted the consultative assembly which drafted the 1992 Rawlings constitution.
The NDC started progressive free SHS. Akuffo Addo even in the first year started progressive until the subsequent year that he absorbed all SHS students- this is factual.

Attah Mills/Mahama came back for another 8 years. Attah Mills never mentioned FSHS until he passed on. Mahama only began his whacky idea of progressively FSHS when the heat of the Akufo Addo campaign was on him. Real and true FSHS became alive in 2017. So, tell me, who really started it.

I know Mahama is scrambling for ideas to bolster their campaign. He has shifted from "I will cancel" to "I will steal" programs he could never have thought of as possibilities. Shame on him and his NDC.

This Nana Akufo-Addo's free SHS has put more burden on parents and guardians than when it was cash-and-carry.
The most important thing that John Mahama did was that he appealed to people and organizations to absorb the boarding and feeding of some of the students in SHS during his presidency.
75% of students benefited from that during his presidency.
That relieved most parents and guardians of the money they would have been using to feed heir wards as the case is today.
We had free education from 1962 to 1969 when Progress Party led by Professor Kofi Abrefa Busia introduced the student loan scheme.
Kwame Nkrumah's free and compulsory education was abolished by PNDC in 1987, together with other social welfare schemes.
It is on record that the first country to introduce free education was Soviet Russia in 1918.
Free education and medical care were later introduced in Britain, which deprived her citizens in the colonies of it.

If we had gone down the "progressively" road, especially, with those who can afford it paying for their children's education, would it also have affected our economy?

I see so much poverty when I go to my village but as a salaried worker, I can't just take on the financial responsibilities of my relatives or their children. When they make the demands, I have to sit down with pen and paper to see where I can cut down cost or make sacrifices in order to help for a month or two. I have to do it progressively otherwise I would put a burden on my family's economy and start having problems with my wife and children.

It appears NDC and JM do not have a ground swelling message. The 24 HR Economy appears dead on arrival and so they are running away from it to enter a FSHS turf, which appears to resonate well with the masses.
This is a shame for a party that has been in opposition for all this while. I'm afraid this is a poor show from JM and NDC. Bawumia and Napo seem to be ahead in share of voice and presence. Where's Jane? Her campaign is mute, whiles JM is in Russia and planning community walks. Shame

The constitution was there even before Nana Addo free shs promises....

FACT IS, the manner in which FREE SHS HAS BEEN IMPLEMENTED BY NANA ADDO IS TOTALLY INEFFECTIVE AND NEEDS A REVIEW AS RECOMMENDED BY THE IMF, JUST AS MAHAMA HAS ALSO CALLED FOR A REVIEW.

The CONSTITUTION WAS EVEN SMARTER WITH THE PROGRESSIVE FREE SHS RECOMMENDATION THAN WHAT NANA ADDO HAS DONE WITH THE INTRODUCTION OF DOUBLE TRACK SYSTEM.

The current state of this scam free shs is costing parents huge amounts of money to send their wards to school for extra classes during their 2 to 3 months FORCE VACATION.

All public universities gave free admission and students received allowances.
When I started class 1 in 1959,my parents took me to the Methodist Book Depot in Sekondi to buy buy books,chalk and pencils.Somewhere along the line in class 2 or 3,my parents stopped buying books and other things because government was providing them for free.
Nana Addo has only expanded the existing free shs in the North to cover the whole country.
As for me,I would have wished the free education is giving to only the needy students.
I'm saying so because that's how is done in the developed countries.Tnx.
