FRANKLIN CUDJOE SHOULD STOP HIS ECONOMIC CLUELESSNESS.
Can someone talk some sense into Franklin Cudjoe because the way he understands capitalism is bewildering. I believe he wants to satisfy his paymasters. Not everything is roses in capitalism. If so Ghana would have been one of the best economically vibrant countries in Africa if not the whole world. Since Kwame Nkrumah's overthrow, previous governments tried to diversify most of our industries. What was the outcome? Most of the companies collapsed. Ghana's biggest problem is our politicians. Majority of them are not patriotic or have integrity. Majority are hardcore criminals, especially in the Akuffo Addo regime. Commonsense should tell Franklin Cudjoe that selling our prime assets to politicians will not solve the problem. If those hotels are not viable, why did the politicians want to purchase them? NPP are deliberately running down the industry so that they can sell them to their friends and cronies. Franklin Cudjoe must realise that he is only talking textbook capitalism. NPP say they are centre right party and have been in power for eight years. Why have they not turned the corner? They have rather taken the country into bankruptcy. Nothing is working in Ghana now.

Just do simple cost benefit analysis. The hotels are not generating enough revenue to offset SSNIT investment into them. to make this hotels more viable in terms of revenue generation, SSNIT in addition to their 60%share, would have to inject huge sums of money for renovations, business process overhaul etc. comparing this to offsetting their stakes in the hotels currently, it makes economic sense to sell their shares in these hotels for a more lucrative investment options. Okujeto is only pursuing his political vindictiveness against his political enemy and not the interest of workers. So in the long run, the Ghanaian worker loses. You don't just jump into strike action because an ordinary politician who lacks business decision making skills to spark you into strike action and you also follow blindly. Kwaky you are on spot on. Which part of the world do you see pension managers running a hotel business? The hotel investment is a mistake made by SSNIT and is just wise to do away with this useless venture bringing SSNIT less than 1.5% rate of return per annum with huge capital expenditure, depleting the funds funds. Unfortunately UTAG/GMA/CLOSAG etc refused to use their head. At least the bulk proceeds from this partially sale can be invested in treasury bills which does not need any further capital expenditure and will go a long way to improve the funds liquidity for the benefit of the pensioners. But due to politics an headed person like Ablakwa and ignorant Abraham Koomson has succeeded to boost their over bloated egos. All the arguments are mere rhetoric without economics.

Why are insulting franklin Cudjoe for speaking the truth.
Which part of the world have you seen pension managers running a full time hotel business? If you had listened very well to SSNIT you will have known that they have tried all different methods to turn the fortunes of the hotel without success. How can the pension fund invest such huge capital and end up with here 1.5% annual rate of returns.
To be frank with SSNIT investing 100% in a hotel business is the most useless and bogus investment decision ever undertaken by the fund. Pension managers just buy shares but not directly involving themselves in running a business like a hotel. The only people benefiting from that bogus hotel investment are the management and the workers, like it happened to the defunct Ghana airways and Ghana telecom.

Tell me,how many people stay at these hotelsyearly. Most are government officials who do not fully settle their bills. The poor struggling Ghanaian worker, works throughout his life but only few are able to build a house. Ssnit started building flats for workers which was a welcome respite but soon they stopped andrather invested our monies in dubious and unprofitable ventures. Now we are saddled with these debt ridden hotels and some people want us to continue holding unto them. I say, sell the lot.I understand the concerns about the buyer, but, they must be sold and more flats built for the poor worker.

From your explanation, where do you stand? It seems you were against the sale on the point of view of partisan politics and envy. Would they have complained if the SSNIT hotels were sold to a foreigner? They would be happy the assets going waste instead of going to an 'NPP man' who could make them viable and profitable. Is there any Ghanaian without tribal or political affiliations? We complain about Ghanaians with political affiliations involved in galamsey but are mute about foreigners involved in galamsey destroying our environment on a larger scale. We must stop our crab mentality. Franklin must bow his head in shame.

The people of Ghana ....they are the shareholders, correct me if I am wrong, but isn't the SSNIT a Government entity?......if so,this board were put there, buy the people of Ghana to manage their investment and that is,shares in four hotels.
So ,who gave the board permission to sell the shares? The board dont own the shares, the people of this Country do.
Putting that aside, the sale was poorly handled,........The shares should have been put out to tender in the public domain so that ANYONE with the money ,could purchase them ,and, maybe at a better price than what's been offered....MAKE SENSE? ........And that is the issue, it's no win coz they were not sold...but to do things the right,....offer the shares in say a block, where there could be say 20 blocks of shares sold to 20 different people or businesses.

Frank, Frankly I don't agree with you on this. The consultant explained that information on terms of payment for the shares were withheld from other bidders. Had this information been made available to them in the bidding document, SSNIT would have had more than 100million dollars.

This debate so far has not discussed the real reason only ssnit hotels are losing money. The real reason is poor management, which can be resolved by government operating at arms-length, and by appointing competent people, not party foot soldiers, to run these hotels. Or by selling them outright. Only a proper analysis can show which option is better for the country. However, selling publicly-owned assets to a sitting MP raises ethical questions, which in the current rotten political climate in Ghana cannot be easily dismissed. Besides the debate about public ownership, and how to manage publicly-owned companies efficiently finished in the mid 1980s - 1990. Why are we behaving like we are trying to re-invent the wheel.

The Ghanaian Media is leading most Ghanaians to think negatively. If this doesn't stop the country will become a failed state and a military coup will be the result. Everything in the country is becoming impossible once NDC is not spearheading it. Some leading media organizations overlook anything positive and publish trash to satisfy some greedy politicians. They have killed fairness in journalism.
