In the past in some cultures, especially in the English culture, the moment a woman got married, she became like a teenage (not even an adult) child of her husband. If she came with wealth, both herself and her wealth became the legal personal property of her husband. He had the right to buy whatever he wanted from her wealth but she had no right to buy anything for herself from her own wealth without first asking his permission. And this is why she was obliged to adopt his name when they got married - because she was like her husband's (adopted) child. Which is why you don't see a Queen adopting her husband's name, not even in the olden days - because she is not under anyone.

My brother, a woman changing her name after marriage is an adopted custom, I hope you know that. Our culture was functioning before this adoption. It was neither a satanic or an anti-family culture. So what is that trend is changing now such that women can now keep their names, hyphenate it by adding their husband's to theirs, give hyphenated names to children etc.? After all, those who introduced that culture to us are changing it themselves. Also, consider the inconveniences associated with names changes. Now in our culture, women school have certificates bearing their names etc. Suddenly, they pick a different name when they can't go back and update all those very crucial documents. They now have to become protectors of document because in this country were we don't have a good database system, you have to give evidence of change of names or you lose good opportunities.

And legally how can the woman stand perhaps when there is conflict of ownership at the absence of the man. She could be denied by wicked husband's relatives of her legal right as a woman.

So you will tell Rebbacca Akufo Addo not to use her husband's named as last name? Especially when the name is a household name. This teaching is wrong and it shouldn't be coming from a high court judge. Women married and joined their husband as one. Telling them to be answering their own name is a wrong speech and this is absolutely unnecessary to bring such matters to the media to discuss. Women are never marginalized by using their husbands names. How do we know Nkrumah children if they didn't answer their father's names or how do history identify his wife? How do we know Theresa kuffor and ageymah Rawlings wife if they didn't answer their husbands names? This view is just one sided and it is projected to encourage women who are feminist and want to live without a man. if the marriage collapsed , in principle the woman got the surname from the man, so must decouple herself from that surname.

The reason behind it in other jurisdiction is
in other jurisdiction - they believe that
since you are a christian and in the bible Men are the head of the family,
they considered the family name as the surname of the man.
That is why in principle
the whole family could be identify by the family name which is the surname of the Man.
it is reasonable but not compulsory to decouple your surname if you are no more families .

In France, women were considered as incapable adults, they were not allowed to vote and not to open bank accounts. Your wife is not your child, she is the child of another man, you procreate with your wife to have your own children and name them. The best thing is for the wife to maintain her maiden name and add her husband's surname if he insists

Our problem in Ghana, is "Sua Tra". Just look at the way girls call themselves at school now, We had Fosu- Fosuwaa, Owusu-Owusuaa, Frimpong-Frimpongaa etc. The English /British never, ever forced us to change that. We did that ourselves by calling girls Akosua Fosu, Abena Owusu, Adwoa Frimpong etc simply because the teacher taught she should use the fathers name. We blame the white man for our own silly and outlandish behaviour. A daft judge talking crap!

Our Akan system of our dad's, naming us after their ancestors was never, ever changed or tampered with by the English /Brits when they ruled us. Again, we chose that path. We cannot blame them for that.

Sad most comments here are lambasting the judge for speaking the obvious, the truth. If you are not sick in your head you will aplaud the judge. Ask the women who have lost their husbands and have taken new husbands for what they go through, they have to change the ex husband name for the new one. Worse of it is the women who devorced their husbands under painful circumstances and the man's name she doesn't want to hear still follows. And how on Earth will take care of my daughter to maturity for a man to come and take her away in marriage and throw away my name and take his name, absolutely nonsense. That's why Muslims who really know their religion never use the husbands name, never because Islam prohibits this practice.
