He was arrested on 5th June and executed on 26th June, more than a week interval. Again, Afrifa was a wealthy farmer who had just won a parliamentary seat in the 1979 general elections. The presidential election went into 2nd round after his death, though. He was far away from Accra in his hometown in the Ashanti Region at the time of his arrest and could not have been to your so-called office.

Kotoka knew nothing about that coup, he's only brought in when Afrifa saw that the coup won't succeed if Kotoka wasn't convinced to join them.
When Afrifa told the his sponsors and the brain behind the coup they objected to it bcoz they wanted to create an all Akan regime so they would achieve their aim. At that point Afrifa assured them they should trust him that he knew what he was doing. Afrifa had planned that if the coup succeeded Kotoka will become the head of state but he'll organise his assassination to pave way for their original plans to be actualized. And so after all that happened and Kotoka became the Head State, Afrifa then activated the 2nd plan which was to assassinate Kotoka. Where from the soldiers who came to assassinate Kotoka, Kumasi. Arthur, Opku and Yeboah were groomed by Afrifa to Carey on that act. God however thwarted their plans by making sure Kotoka wasn't killed at home.
When his body was dropped at the airport Afrifa who was waiting for the result realised that alarm has blown so he quickly stepped in to calm the arreated soldiers promising he'll get them out but unfortunately he couldnt as planned so two were found guilty and shot at Teshie before they were shot they beckoned on General Ankrah and told him who was behind the whole plan but the weak and feeble Ankrah instead of stopping the firing squad instead chided Opoku and Yeboah for not disclosing that when they were before the military tribunal and it was late bcoz he's afraid of Afrifa.
To cover his tracks Afrifa quickly named the Airport after Kotoka to appease the Ewes in the military to forestall any counter coup.
This story is always told to shield Afrifa from culpability but he was mastermind of the whole coup from Manshyia where the coup was initiated. Cowards!!!
