The reason why I oppose this new city idea is that first, we have not been able to maintain Accra to any reasonable level. We have broken and low level infrastructure and there is no money to fix them and build new ones. So if we can’t keep the old city, how do we build a new one and what is the guarantee that there will be money to build and maintain it. Rebuild Accra with modern infrastructure and when the city is fully restored and utilised, then we can think of building another city. Remember Nigeria? Nigeria became bankrupt after Abuja was built and it has never been the same again. Mahama, with so many corrupt minds in our political and business systems, think again.

Lagos is 15 million, Cairo is 20 million, Delhi is 30 million, Tokyo is 37 million etc. Tokyo is one of the most functional and clean cities in the world. There is absolutely no need to develop any city outside Accra. Accra is just a disorganized, filthy city. Put an intracity train from Kasoa/Adenta/Achimota and Tema to Accra central and 50% of the traffic is gone. Clean up the city and enforce traffic laws and another 50% of the nonsense is gone. If Mahama wants to waste billions of dollars building houses for his family and friends fine but it 'this Accra is congested message so I am going to build a new city' is absolutely nonsensical. Accra is not a big city and anybody who has travelled outside Ghana knows this.

How can we think about building a new capital when there are still schools under trees in some communities? We have serious road infrastructure issues across the country so no serious government can think about building a new capital when there is not even one motorway connecting any two cities or towns in the country. The reason we do not have them is that we do not have the money yet.

Mahama's reason for suggesting a new capital city is that Accra is choked. For me Accra is choked because of poor transportation infrastructure. Accra lacks mass transport system. Accra needs a well planned transport network in the form of seamless metro buses and railway system. I was thrilled when the Sky Train idea came up and it is unfortunate that it did not materialise. If Accra is provided with, for example, a tram system and intra-city well planned bus system, vehicular traffic can disappear. Let us invest in mass transportation in Accra which will surely de-congest the city. Also some ministries and other State Enterprise Headquarters can be moved to other cities and towns across the country. We may need another capital in say 100 years time but certainly not now. New capital city is not a priority and in any case I wonder if we have the funds to build one. Let's concentrate on developing the infrastructure in the capital and elsewhere.

For the first time Anyidoho has seen wisdom in JM vision for Ghana and is calling for more details. I am happy for him if he will continue like this. I pray the next NDC government will take this matter seriously so that we can take this opportunity to build a first class city where the next generation will look up to own a house and work in. Let us all support this bold initiative because our current City wasn't planned well.
