No one disputes Banku's claim that he's half Malian and half Ghanaian. Banku's story about his grandfather being brought to Ghana to clean gutters is false. The fact that Malians were allowed easy entry and residency in Ghana during the Nkrumah administration doesn't mean that they were brought to Ghana by Nkrumah. Many Malians came to Ghana,and like others from across West Africa, decided to stay and work in the country, and they were never bothered by anyone regarding their status in the country. Over time, many of the Malians blended into Ghanaian society, first through residency in Zongos, and eventually moving on to other neighbourhoods. Nkrumah did not bring Banku's grandfather to Ghana. Nor did Nkrumah bring any person from Mali to Ghana to clean gutters. Banku's grandfather ended up cleaning gutters because he very likely did not possess any special skills to work in other fields.

Nkrumah never brought any person from Mali to clean gutters in Ghana. These Malian settlers evidently must have had no skills, and they mostly spoke French and their local Malian languages, hence the decision to find menial jobs cleaning gutters.

Infact, the term 'kayayoo' and the plural form 'kayayei' (ie female head porter/s) is derived from kaya, the name we gave to the male head porters those days.

In the house I grew up in Accra, there were 6 men and their wives - all from Mali. All of them were very nice people.

Fact is: strictly speaking: EVERYBODY IS A FOREIGNER, IF WE'LL ONLY TRACE OUR ROOTS JUST 5 FIVE GENERATIONS BACK.
