The reality is that most Ghanaians were not aware of the role certain foreign powers played in Dr Kwame Nkrumah's overthrow. Compare the reaction of Ghanaians then to that of the ordinary Turk in the street when a foreign sponsored coup against President Erdogan of Turkiye (note the new spelling of Turkey) was foiled in 2016. A faction within the Military and Air force attempted to overthrow him but an enraged public rose against them. Who can forget the videos of ORDINARY TURKISH CITIZENS DRAGGING THE COUP MAKERS OUT OF THEIR TANKS AND ARRESTING THEM RIGHT THERE IN THE STREETS. Some of the coup plotters were were beaten to a pulp by bystanders. Before this time Turkiye was noted for its history of coups.

Nkrumah felt invincible and ignored the warnings of impending plot to overthrow him. A month later, after the Nigerian coup, Nkrumah was overthrown. When you see your neighbor’s beard on fire, it’s prudent to place a bowl of water near your own beard. From that January and February, Nigerian and Ghanaian armed forces became interested in politics, and that led to series of coups and counter coups in both countries. It took decades for the soldiers in both countries to had over governments to “civilians,” who called themselves politicians. The political histories of Nigeria and Ghana are really very similar; now both former British colonies (countries) are in a similar economic mess. Their leaders are extremely corrupt and greedy. The trend is likely not going to change, with or without fossil oil, Sad state of affairs.
