I am against this nonsense of mother tongue! The world has become a village and the international languag4es must be accepted. How many of the several Ghanaian languages go beyond their local area? Even Akan which is widely spoken does not go beyond, Elubu, Aflao, Widana, Paga and Hamile. I can understand all those making the noise are protecting their jobs. imagine Ghanaians with PhDs are required to have IELT or TOEFL to relocate to US, UK, Canada., Australia, etc. You these hypocrites send your children to do British and American curriculums leaving the average Ghanaian child struggling with WASSCE which is not recognised much outside Ghana's borders.
If i have my own way, we will not teach any local language in this country. All the politicians steal our money and send their children outside to study leaving us jobless here. Ig Ghana had been self sufficient in everything where jobs are available, who will want to travel to this cold climate with its challenges?

@Jake That is why we have to encourage our local languages to develop scientifically so that we can do science and all subjects in our local languages.

Mother tongue is important. However, our nation should not use it as a broom to sweep mastery of Basic English under the carpet. LETS follow the German model: German mother tongue and Basic English TOGETHER!!!

Ghanaians should teach in their local languages and introduce English later on, like all these countries do. English is a foreign language, it is not spoken in the vast majority of households in Ghana our children are already at a disadvantage when
they have to get to grips with a new language before embarking on the journey of learning. Could this be one of the reasons why Africa lags behind in development compared to other countries in Asia? We have abandoned our languages and cultures for ones we do not fully understand because they are not ours, we continue to struggle to make any progress. We need to have a rethink about language, and what it means to a people, their learning, development, culture etc. Iook and learn how other countries go about this and the benefits it can brings them.
