Housemaste's job is a thankless one. Soon no one would like to be one. Students can be mischievous and it is sometimes to tell real from pretense. No teacher takes delight in the misery of any student. Housemaster's duties are are additional to the primary teaching job. It is sacrificial. The extra allowance is not worth writing home about.

You are very right. I was a Housemaster for a number of years in High Schools and College before I left the country. The allowances given to Housemasters and Mistresses are insults taking into consideration the demands and nature of their work. Many teachers will decline to occupy such positions. No teacher will want a student dead.
The problem is that many students feign illnesses just to be given an exeat to go and fool around in town. As a student, I did it before. The best that can be done is to have a Sick Bay with qualified nurses who can attend to students who claim to be sick before they are taken to hospital in the company of a trusted teacher.
The students live in overcrowded rooms, eat poor food and lack any physical exercise. What should we expect from such situations? I am sorry for the death of the student but don’t blame the Housemistress. Modern students are too honest to be trusted. If I were to teach in Ghana again, nothing will make me become a Housemaster. It is just a crazy and torturous position at all schools in Ghana.

That’s why it’s important that govt ensure that there are health personnel; a nurse or physician assistant stationed in all schools who work 24/7 to at least give first aid. But for most schools, there is not enough housing facilities even for skeletal domestic staff. That’s something PTA can take up but govt has crippled the efficiency of the association.
