Workshop for accounting officers opens at Takoradi

Takoradi, Sept. 6, GNA - Mr Raphael Tuffour, acting Controller and Accountant General, on Monday called on accountants in the public sector to acquaint themselves with financial reforms in Public Financial Management Systems.

He made the call on Monday at the opening of a three-day workshop on Public Financial Management for the Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDA) and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) in the Western Region at Takoradi

Mr Tuffuor said reforms that government had embarked upon as part of the fiscal decentralization policy, would enhance the work of accounting officers.

He said the latest reform that had been introduced by government was the Ghana Integrated Financial Management Information System (GIFMIS). Mr Tuffour said the continuous updating of skills and knowledge of public sector staff on best practices would assist to "Produce a cutting edge and consistent improvement in our service delivery". He said citizens were increasingly demanding the use of resources and audit reports consistently revealing some control weakness in the management of public funds.

Mr Tuffour said the workshop would focus on the compliance with the Financial Laws and expenditure controls and would help to facilitate the usage of accounting data and reports as powerful tools by management in their day-to-day schedules.
