A woman has collapsed and died during a violent protest near the Ghana–Burkina Faso border town of Hamile in the Upper West Region.

The unidentified woman was reportedly hurling insults at security personnel before she collapsed.

She was rushed to a nearby hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival.

According to a report by Joy News’ reporter Rafiq Salam, on September 15, 2025, her death occurred during a demonstration initiated by angry youth against officers of the Ghana Immigration Service (GIS).

“What happened was that there was a woman who was alleged to have come to the protest. She was allegedly hurling a lot of insults on the immigration officers but later she collapsed.

“She was rushed to a nearby hospital where she was pronounced dead. That really aggravated the tensions in the area,” the reporter said.

Protesters burned car tires, vandalised the Immigration Service office, and set a Service vehicle on fire.

The unrest began late on Saturday night September 13, 2025, and continued into Sunday morning September 14, 2025.

The protests were sparked by the alleged kidnapping of a Burkinabe woman named Ajara.

She was reportedly on her way to visit a relative in Nandom when she was forced into a vehicle by unidentified gunmen, allegedly, aided by immigration officers.

Ajara is said to have been living in the Ivory Coast due to instability in her home country.

Security in the area has since been heightened as tensions remain high.
