President John Dramani Mahama has announced that his Cabinet has approved a new policy aimed at moving Ghana's diplomatic missions from rented properties to state-owned facilities abroad.
The policy is titled "Strategic Transition from Rental to Development of Properties."
In a report by graphic.com.gh, on September 4, 2025, he explained that under the new policy, a transaction advisor has already been appointed.
Standard property developments are currently being designed, and funding mechanisms are currently under negotiation.
What President Mahama told newly appointed ambassadors and envoys
As part of the implementation, the president has directed the Ministers of Finance and Foreign Affairs to urgently address the high costs associated with renting properties for Ghana’s missions overseas.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony of 18 newly appointed Ambassadors, High Commissioners, and Protocol officials at Jubilee House in Accra on Thursday, September 4, 2025, President Mahama revealed that Ghana spends over $15 million annually on rent for its foreign missions, a practice he described as both unsustainable and wasteful.
“Ghana cannot continue spending more than $15 million every year on renting properties abroad for our diplomatic use. This is not a judicious use of taxpayers’ resources, and the Reset Agenda is an immediate reversal of this trend,” he said.
He further emphasised that the plan will not only reduce unnecessary expenditure but also project Ghana’s image more positively on the international stage.
“This shift will ensure that our missions abroad are housed in proper homes owned by the republic, reducing wasteful expenditure while safeguarding Ghana’s dignity on the international stage,” he added.
