President John Dramani Mahama, in accordance with Article 146(9) of the 1992 Constitution, has removed the Chief Justice, Justice Gertrude Araba Torkornoo, from office with immediate effect.
The decision announced on Monday September 1, 2025, follows the receipt of the report of the Committee of Inquiry established under Article 146(6) of the Constitution to investigate a petition submitted by a Ghanaian citizen, Daniel Ofori, calling for the Chief Justice’s removal.
After examining the petition, extensive evidence, and testimonies, the Committee concluded that the allegations of stated misbehaviour under Article 146(1) had been sufficiently proven. It therefore recommended her removal from office.
Per Article 146(9) of the Constitution, the President is bound to act in accordance with the Committee’s findings and recommendations.
