Ghanaian media personality Okatakyie Afrifa-Mensah has demanded answers from the National Security regarding the interception and seizure of a large stash of gold bars and cash, hidden in 12 containers at a warehouse in Sapeiman in February 2025.
Speaking on his US edition of the For Record show on December 22, 2025, Okatakyie noted that despite the government’s ongoing accountability series to the people, the state has failed to provide updates to Ghanaians on the gold bars and cash discovered during the National Security operation led by Director of Special Operations at the National Security Secretariat, Richard Jakpa.
He has called for a thorough investigation into the matter to ensure accountability regarding the whereabouts of these valuables.
“We were in this country when Jakpa led the National Security operations that seized gold bars and a stash of cash. Jakpa, where is the gold and the money? We want to know the true state of the nation. Where is the gold? The government is talking about the state of the nation and accountability series, where is the gold?” he questioned.
National Security uncovers fake cash in boxes belonging to BoG at Sapeiman
Background
On February 9, 2025, National Security officers intercepted a massive stash of counterfeit US dollars, Ghanaian cedi notes, and suspected gold bars hidden in 12 shipping containers at a warehouse in Sapeiman, Accra.
The containers were tracked to a warehouse around Sapeiman in the Ga South Municipality, where a special late-night operation was conducted following a tip-off.
The unspecified amount of US dollars and Ghana cedis seized by the security officials including counterfeits were hidden in twelve 20ft shipping containers.
The fake currencies, mostly bundles of US dollars, were found in wooden boxes covered with cement.
Additional currencies suspected to be counterfeit were discovered stashed in the boxes, which were sealed with plywood and covered with charcoal.
Two containers were still unaccounted for but were being tracked. Boxes of metals suspected to be gold bars and fake Ghana Army uniforms and boots were also found.
Additionally, a manhunt was launched for suspects, including a ringleader known as Alhaji.
