‘Arab Spring’ may occur in Ghana if youth are not given jobs – DYMOG to government

The Executive Convener of Dynamic Youth Movement of Ghana (DYMOG), Edward Tuttor, has urged government to be cautious about its handling of unemployment issues in the country or risk having the youth adopt the ‘Arab Spring’ approach to coerce the Akufo-Addo government to address the issue.

The Arab Spring was a series of anti-government protests, uprisings, and armed rebellions that spread across the Middle East in early 2011. The term is a reference to the Revolutions of 1848, a year in which a wave of political upheavals occurred in many countries throughout Europe, many resulting in an overthrow of old monarchical structures.

Speaking at the launch of ‘Urgent Action on Youth Unemployment’ in Accra, Convener of the DYMOG group, Edward Tuttor said; “If care is not taken the Ghanaian youth will bring Arab Spring upon themselves; this is not something that will be new. It has happened before and it can happen again if we don’t take drastic action against youth unemployment. A little spark will cause our peace and security and we do not want to go there.”

Mr. Tuttor added that the youth unemployment situation in the country has now become a ‘national crisis’ since successive governments seem not to have the problem-solving gravitas to create sustainable jobs.

“To our fellow Ghanaian youth, this grave crisis goes beyond who you voted for and the ideology you subscribe to. Our leaders are breaching the most important clause of the 1992 Constitution Article 1(1)” he noted.



DYMOG believes that the repercussions of youth unemployment are numerous among which include crippling current and future economies, rise in social vices, psychological trauma, loss of self-esteem, moral decadence among others. Worse of all is the National Security dimension which becomes a big threat to national security.

‘The Urgent Action on Youth Unemployment Campaign’ is to get the entire Nation to arrive at a consensus that, Youth Unemployment is an Existential Threat! The cardinal purpose of this campaign is to galvanize support from the vibrant youth of Ghana, Civil Society, Student front, the Media and other key stakeholders like the Trades Union Congress, Political Parties and Government to collectively kill the common enemy- Youth Unemployment!

DYMOG will also come out with youth-friendly pragmatic proposals that will help combat youth unemployment from the Youth Perspective. These proposals will focus on Agriculture, Sports, Showbiz, Tourism and Transport.

“We shall do this to demonstrate that, the Ghanaian Youth is not lazy. We do have great ideas, we are highly committed and most importantly tell our leaders that, if the right structures are put in place, we shall do amazing things” Edward Tuttor stressed.
