Tanina community still refuses to join Wa East District

Tanina (UW/R), Aug. 28, GNA - Almost two years after the community was ceded to the new Wa East District of the Upper West Region, the people of Tanina, a predominantly farming settlement of about 6,000 inhabitants on the Wa-Bole trunk road still refuses to have any thing to do with the new district they were placed under since 2004. Consequently, the area's elected assembly member had also boycotted attending the district's assembly meetings at Funsi, the district capital, while the people on their part refused to meet their basic rate and other taxes to the assembly.

Investigations by the Ghana News Agency revealed that, opposition to the area joining the new district was particularly entrenched among the youth.

Until the creation of three additional districts in the region in 2004, Tanina was originally part of the Wa municipality. Other reasons advanced by those, who are against joining the Wa East District is that Funsi, the Wa East District capital is too far from the area, a distance of about 120 kilometres as against the 20 kilometres to the regional capital Wa and 30 kilometres from Wechiau, capital of the Wa West District.

Despite their boycott, the Wa East District Assembly had not abandoned the people.

On Saturday, Mr Adams Mahama Issahaku, the Wa East District Chief Executive awarded a building contract for the construction of a three classroom JSS block, a toilet and a urinal at a total cost of 450 million cedis for the community.

At a meeting with the chief of the community and some few other inhabitants, Mr Issahaku introduced the contractor to the people and urged them not to hesitate to point any shortcomings on the part of the contractor in the execution of the project. The project is to be completed within four months. 28 Aug. 06
