The National Democratic Congress (NDC) Chairman in the Dunkwa Constituency of the Western Region reportedly led members of his community to stop an anti-illegal mining team from carrying out their operations in the constituency.
According to a report by JoyNews, the said NDC executive stated that he was not going to allow the team, which was a government advisory team on a fact-finding mission, to assess the impact of galamsey in the Western and Central regions, and to operate because he had not been consulted before the raid.
The report indicated that community members, many of whom were directly involved in illegal mining activities along the Offin River, blocked the roads to prevent the team from moving to the mining sites.
They even threatened to fight the heavily armed military personnel accompanying the team, the report added.
The anti-galamsey team was forced to turn back and could not complete its mission in the community.
A video of the incident, which has gone viral, showed the community members facing off with some of the military men on the team.
The video also showed the vehicles of the galamsey taskforce blocked by the cars of the community members.
An aerial view of the community showed acres of land completely devastated by galamsey activities.
