Parts of Accra were left submerged in floodwaters after several hours of torrential rain on Wednesday, October 1, 2025.
The rains, which started around 5pm in some locations, wreaked havoc and caused significant damage to properties in certain areas, leaving major roads blocked.

On the Mallam-Kasoa highway, videos sighted by GhanaWeb on October 2, 2025, show roads connecting parts of Accra and Kasoa, as well as, Cape Coast and Takoradi, completely flooded, causing heavy vehicular traffic and leaving commuters stranded.
The intensity of the floods also washed a wooden kiosk into the middle of the road, just a few meters away from the West Hills Mall.
Some parts of Dansoman were also affected by the flooding, with floodwaters covering the road surface and causing vehicular traffic.
Haatso, also situated close to Madina, had some of its streets flooded.
The downpour once again exposed the vulnerabilities of the capital’s drainage systems, as vehicles struggled to move through the waterlogged streets.
Urban planning experts have long criticised the lack of efficient and sustainable solutions to manage the impacts of climate change in Accra.
Despite policies aimed at building resilience, authorities in charge of the city’s infrastructure appear to be reactive rather than proactive in managing such situations.
Ahead of the 2025 rainy season, President Mahama set up a seven-member Anti-Flood Taskforce to address Accra’s perennial flooding challenges.

The Taskforce, chaired by Deputy Chief of Staff (Operations), Stanislav Xoese Dogbe, began its work on Wednesday, March 12, 2025, with a comprehensive assessment of flood-prone areas across the capital.
