A young man believed to be in his late twenties has been captured on video whipping and assaulting some street beggars.
The video, circulating on X on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, shows the man wielding a black leather belt to beat beggars who had camped under the bridge at the Kwame Nkrumah Circle interchange.
I will get rid of all beggars and prostitutes from our streets – Interior minister
The street beggars, mostly elderly women and their young children, were seen fleeing for safety, fearing further beatings from the man.
Some onlookers and passersby watched on nonchalantly, going about their business.
The man’s actions have drawn reactions from Ghanaians on social media, with some urging the authorities to look into the matter.
While a few noted that the man's intention might have been to help clear the streets, many felt that physically assaulting the beggars was not the right approach.
It will be recalled that in May 2025, the Ghana Immigration Service conducted an operation that rounded up a total of 2,241 foreign nationals involved in street begging.
The exercise began in the early hours of Friday, May 16, 2025, and focused on Kaneshie, Abossey Okai, and Kwame Nkrumah Circle.
During the operation, several women and children, suspected to be foreign nationals, were apprehended and transported to an assembly point.
Repatriated foreign beggars return to Accra’s streets
The group consisted of 909 adults and 1,332 children. Following confirmation of their identities, the Ghana Immigration Service repatriated them.
But despite these efforts, the beggars have returned to the same locations.
