The Oti Regional Director of the National Disaster Management Organisation (NADMO), Foster Dzre, has disclosed that an 11-year-old boy was controlling the boat involved in the tragic Kete Krachi accident in the Oti Region on Sunday, October 12, 2025.
According to a report by myjoyonline.com, he made this known in an interview with JoyNews on Monday, October 13, 2025.
“The boat they use for fishing is not that big, so you can see that the people on board were mostly children. Even the person handling the boat was an 11-year-old boy,” he stated.

Dzre lamented that most of the passengers on the boat were not wearing life jackets.
“We provide life jackets to commercial boats, but this particular boat was a private one used mainly for fishing,” he noted.
Meanwhile, the Ghana Maritime Authority (GMA) and the Ghana Navy have launched an investigation into the incident.

The fatal boat disaster resulted in the loss of 15 lives.
Preliminary findings by the GMA suggest that the boat was overloaded beyond its safe operational capacity.
