MPs Recalled From Holidays

Accra, Aug. 19 Parliament, on the orders of the Speaker, is to reconvene on 2nd September, Mr Rex Owusu-Ansah, acting Clerk of the House, told Ghana Review International today. Mr Owusu-Ansah did not state the business slated for the House but urged all members to ''break their ten-week recess and make their way to Accra for the meeting''. When Parliament rose sine die on 1st August, Mr Kenneth Dzirasah, First Deputy Speaker, asked members to be on stand-by for a possible recall notice any time a Utilities Regulatory Body bill is ready. The bill is expected to take a first reading when the House reconvenes on the first Tuesday of September. The draft legislative proposal has been necessitated by a steep increase in electricity tariffs by the Electricity Company of Ghana and the Volta River Authority which were later suspended on the orders of the President. The President in his directive to the Minister of Mines and Energy, also asked Parliament to consider the bill on a certificate of urgency to expedite the establishment of the body for the new tariffs to be fixed latest by the end of September.
